CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte women’s soccer head coach John Cullen has announced the hiring of Kim Crowley to his staff as an assistant coach beginning with the 2013 season. Crowley, a Phoenix native, replaces Cory Alexander who left the program to travel the world.
“We are delighted to get her (Kim) on board,” Cullen said. “We were able to bring her in at the start of our spring season. She was able to see us play every game and get a good comfort level with our players. That will help her going into our fall season.”
Crowley joins the 49ers after spending three seasons as an assistant at her alma mater, Catawba, in Salisbury, N.C. With the Indians program in that capacity, she was a member of the staff under Cullen during the 2007 and 2008 campaigns and then stayed on board for head coach Chad Miller’s one season. Catawba posted a combined 43-14-7 mark during those three years, participating in the 2008 NCAA Division II Region Tournament.
She coordinated match information and preparation, planned, organized and conducted practice sessions and provided input on player evaluation and team operations during her tenure in addition to a variety of other duties.
Crowley also served as the Director of Fitness Assessment and Training at the college for just over two years, enhancing a personal training program for over 50 people that continues to grow.
While still in college, she took on a dual role as the head girls’ soccer coach at Mount Pleasant High School in Mt. Pleasant, N.C. Her three-year experience included the coordination of home game match preparation and field maintenance, monitoring the academic performance of student-athletes and working closing with the school’s athletic department and conference staffs.
She also has a background with the FC Carolina Alliance club program, serving as the U11 head coach and U14 assistant coach while still a student at Catawba.
“I’ve known John for a long time and when the opportunity came to join this staff, I jumped at it,” Crowley said. “This is a great program. I’ve enjoyed working with John and getting to know Robert (Lane). I think the three of us together are going to work well together and balance each other out. We have a good chemistry going between the three of us.”
As an Indian student-athlete, she was recruited to Catawba by Cullen and went on to earn 2006 All-South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Second Team honors. The team posted a combined 60-14-9 mark during her four seasons from 2003 through 2006, including a SAC title in 2005 following a 16-4-1 campaign. It was the second-straight season in which the program earned a trip to the NCAA Division II Region Tournament, after it completed the best record in school history at 16-2-3 in 2004.
Crowley’s collegiate career started with an early highlight, as she assisted on a goal in her first match during a road win at Barton.
At the conclusion of her collegiate career, Crowley signed with the Carolina RailHawks of the USL W-League for the 2008 campaign. The semi-pro franchise was based in Cary, N.C., and it played at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Crowley owns a US Soccer Federation National “D” License. She graduated from Catawba in May 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in communication, adding a business minor to her diploma.
