Charlotte third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) was today named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District ® First Team in District Three by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It was his second-straight year to be named All-District III. Last year, he was the sixth player in program history on the list, joining Mike Ambrose, Rob Lyerly, Ryan Rivers, Cory Tilton and Steve Wagoner. He again advances to the national ballot, where he was named a Second-Team Academic All-America last season, joining Ambrose (2006) and Wagoner (1987 & 1988) in earning Charlotte's only Academic All-America Honors in team history.
The 2013 Capital One Academic All-District ® Baseball Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One became the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs in 2011.
The Academic All-District ® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the first year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moves from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and doubles the number of scholar-athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
Basen sports a 3.97 grade point average in double majors of accounting and finance, in addition to tying for the conference lead with 38 RBI. A 2012 Second-Team All-Conference performer on the field, Basen is currently tied for fourth in the league with 58 hits and tied for seventh in runs scored with 33, and has started the last 140 games for the 49ers entering this weekend. He twice won Player of the Week in the A-10 last season, and was named Co-Player of the Week this season on February 25. He has been on the Chancellor's List in all seven semesters at Charlotte and earned Academic All-Conference in 2011 and 2012. He has started all but one game at third base for Charlotte in the past two seasons. He is on the list of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award.
The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.
Academic All-District ® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
