Charlotte and WInthrop split a Tuesday late-night doubleheader for Charlotte's final home games with the visiting Eagles taking a 10-3 opener and the 49ers winning 7-1 in the nightcap at the D.L. Phillips Complex in non-conference action.
Charlotte got out ahead with two runs in the second inning. Natalie Capone (St. Charles, Ill / St. Charles North HS) drove a leadoff single through the middle and stole second. An infield single from Alex Rogers (Lutz, Fla. / Sunlake HS) and a throwing error scored Capone from second and after a fielder’s choice, a single and a wild pitch, the Niners got an RBI bunt single on a squeeze from Samantha Slade (Apex, N.C.) for a 2-0 lead.
Winthrop scored two runs on a walk and three hits before they loaded the bases for Noble, who hit a grand slam to left center for a 6-2 lead.
Noble struck again in the seventh with a homer down the line with a runner on and two outs.
Charlotte had a leadoff homer in the sixth, the seventh of the season from Kalie Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Northwest Florida State / Ardrey Kell HS) to pull the 49ers to within five, at 8-3.
The Eagles got another two-run homer in the top of the seventh, also to left, this one from Alex White, for the game’s final scoring play.
Winthrop starter Sutton Watson allowed 10 hits and a walk, but stranded 10 Niners batters on bsae to get the win and improve to 15-12. She struck out one batter.
Charlotte starter Katie Watkins allowed 12 hits and four walks, with five strikeouts in the loss, dropping her to 13-15.
Charlotte softball jumped out to an early lead and surged in the middle innings for a 7-1 win to split a Tuesday night doubleheader against Winthrop at the D.L. Phillips Complex in non-conference action. Charlotte is now 22-26 on the year, while Winthrop is 25-24.
The Eagles scored first with an unearned run on a walk, a hit and an error in the opening frame.
Charlotte scored two unearned runs on a throwing error that went all the way to the center field fence on a fielder’s choice for a 2-1 lead.
The Niners then plated three runs without a hit in the fourth on four walks, a hit batter and a fielder’s choice for a 5-1 lead. Briana Gwaltney (Anaheim Hills, Calif. / Canyon HS) drew a bases-loaded walk for an RBI before Chelsea Ingersoll (Charlotte, N.C. / Butler HS) was hit by a pitch to drive in another in the frame. Jessica Plemmons (Lexington, N.C. / North Davidson HS) put home the third run on a ground ball out in the inning.
The Niners got two more runs on a two-RBI single from Lang for the final runs of the game.
Charlotte starter Chelsea Lisikatos (Cold Spring, N.Y. / Haldane) got the win to improve her record to 7-10. The lone run scored against her in the first was unearned and she scattered nine hits and a walk in seven innings. She struck out five.
Winthrop starter Sara Allen allowed the two unearned runs in the opening inning, but took the loss. She allowed three hits and two walks in three innings, with two strikeouts.
Charlotte will conclude the regular season on the road this Saturday with an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader at La Salle, starting a noon.
