Charlotte, NC – Charlotte 49ers head coach Alan Major has announced that 6-7 forward Bernard Sullivan has transferred from Clemson to Charlotte. Sullivan, who is from Gastonia, North Carolina and played high school basketball at Davidson Day School, will sit out the 2013-14 season in accordance with NCAA rules and have two years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2014-15 season.

“We are excited that Bernard has decided to come home and play for the 49ers,” Major said. “We recruited him heavily when he was in high school. Bernard is a skilled athletic forward who is able to handle the basketball. He will be a great addition to our team.”

Sullivan appeared in 56 games in two seasons at Clemson. He scored 89 points and grabbed 66 rebounds, while shooting 41 percent from the field during his two years at Clemson. He scored a career-high seven points twice, once against Virginia Tech in 2011-12 and against Georgia Tech this past season.

As a senior at Davidson Day, he was rated a four-star prospect by ESPNU, Rivals.com and Scout.com. He was rated the number 83 overall prospect by Rivals and number 87 by Scout. ESPNU rated him the number 22-ranked power forward in the 2011 class. He was named MVP of the West team at the 2011 Jordan Brand Classic Regional All-Star game after recording a double-double with 17 points and 12. As a senior, he earned first-team All-State honors after averaging 15.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Sullivan played his first three seasons of high school basketball at Charlotte’s North Mecklenburg High School. He was a three-time all-conference selection at North Meck. As a junior at North Meck, he averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds.

“I am very excited to come back home and play for the Charlotte 49ers,” Sullivan said. “I really enjoyed meeting the coaching staff. I am really looking forward to playing with a great group of guys.”

With a young lineup that often featured five freshmen and sophomores on the court, Charlotte went 21-12 last season and earned a post-season berth in the NIT.  It was the 49ers first 20-win season and first post-season appearance since 2008.  The 49ers, who competed in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2012-13, will move to Conference USA in 2013-14.
