Charlotte baseball got five runs in the first inning and cruised to the Atlantic 10 Conference series win over Temple in a 10-2 Sunday finale at Skip Wilson Field. After collecting 16 hits on Saturday, the 49ers had 16 more in the series finale to improve the overall record to 26-19, and 10-5 in the A-10. Temple dropped to 16-23, 6-12 in the league.
The 49ers collected five hits and two walks to bat around in the opening inning against Owls starter Dan Moller. Freshman designated hitter Nick Daddio (Huntersville, N.C. / Hough HS) hit a two-out, bases-loaded single through the right side two plate the last two runs of the opening frame.
Charlotte kept the scoring coming with two more runs in the third on four hits. Daddio knocked in his career-high third RBI in the inning with a single to left field and redshirt senior shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) drilled his 51st career double to left in the frame. An RBI bunt single from senior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) completed the scoring for the inning.
Redshirt senior outfielder Tony Montalbano (New Orleans, La. / Bossier Parish JC) bunted his way on in the fourth with one out and eventually scored on a delayed double steal in the inning for Charlotte’s eighth run. The 49ers made it 9-0 after senior center fielder Michael Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS) was hit by a pitch and later came home on a ground ball double play in the fifth.
At that point of the game, Temple managed single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut the lead to 9-2 before a late run in the ninth came in for Charlotte with a Green RBI single.
Charlotte starter Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) limited the Owls to just the two runs in 5.1 innings. He allowed seven hits and a walk while striking out five. He has struck out 20 batters in his last three starts, a span of 20.2 innings. Hudgens improved to 5-0 with the win.
Moller took the loss to drop to 1-5.
Relievers Jordan Hudson (Lexington, N.C. / West Davidson HS) and Wes Hatley (Norwood, N.C. / South Stanly HS) finished out the game for Charlotte, allowing one hits and one walk, both by Hatley, in the last 3.2 innings.
Daddio and redshirt senior outfielder J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga.) led all players with three hits. Daddio’s total was a career high, while Elseser tied his season high in that category. Three different 49ers scored two runs each for the game-high total.
Outfielders Allen Stiles and Jimmy Kerrigan had two hits each to lead the Owls.
Charlotte will conclude the road trip Tuesday with a 4 p.m. game against Coastal Carolina at Pelicans Park in Myrtle Beach.
NOTES: This conference series is the first for Charlotte during which the 49ers scored 20 or more runs and was the high hits total (37) for a conference series… Charlotte previously collected 36 hits in the Richmond road series… Charlotte is 6-3 on the road in conference, winning two out of three on all three road trips to this point of the season… Charlotte is tied with Butler, Rhode Island and Xavier with the 10-5 mark in league and third place in the standings… The five runs in the first are a season-high for opening-frame runs by the Niners… Charlotte drew six walks, a season-high total in a conference game this season… The eight-run margin of victory was the highest for Charlotte in an A-10 game this season.
