CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Due to rain on Sunday the Charlotte softball team’s doubleheader against visiting Butler was canceled. However, that didn’t stop Sunday’s Senior Day festivities as seniors Briana Gwaltney, Chelsea Stamey, Kalie Lang, and Lindsey Holloman were honored before the start of what would have been game one.
Gwaltney, Stamey, Lang, and Holloman received framed commemorative jerseys and a bouquet of flowers as they were accompanied by their parents on the field. Laughter, tears, and several acts of gratitude painted the scene for Sunday’s ceremony.
Gwaltney, a four-year member of the 49ers has been arguably one of the best players in Charlotte history. The California native will end her career as the career home run and RBI leader, as well as the single-season home run record holder. She has also etched her name in the top ten of several offensive categories and has been a steady part of the Niners’ outfield over the past four years. Gwaltney’s long list of accolades includes a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Mid-Atlantic Region selection, three Atlantic 10 First-Team honors, and she was named the College Sports Madness Player of the Year in 2012. After graduation in May, she will continue her career and play internationally over the summer with the Centrals in the Netherlands.
Stamey, another four-year member has progressed over the years and turned into a solid starter, working her way into the lineup. She started her senior season by earning her first Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player of the Week award after batting .571 during the season opener at the First Pitch Classic in Charlotte. Stamey was an essential component of Charlotte’s offense that was ranked 14th in the nation in the beginning of the season. She’s enjoyed a seven-game hitting streak throughout the season and has recorded six multiple-hit games. Stamey, a psychology major from Charlotte will also graduate in May.
Lang, a three-year member of the 49ers has contributed in dual roles for the team. She has been the starting first baseman over the past three years and has seen some time in the circle for Charlotte. She has appeared in 32 games as a pitcher and recorded 30 strikeouts. Offensively, Lang has recorded 112 career hits, 84 RBIs, 32 doubles, and 14 home runs. Last season, Lang ended the year by being named to the A-10 All-Tournament Team. This season, Lang is third on the team in doubles with nine, RBIs with 24, and home runs with six. Three of Lang’s home runs came against Campbell on March 13th. Lang, a sociology major from Charlotte will graduate in December.
Holloman, a four-year member of the 49ers has been a pivotal part of Charlotte’s outfield during her tenure. Holloman continued to improve offensively over the years and has turned in her most successful season this year. She was named Madness Atlantic 10 Softball Player of the Week by College Sports Madness on March 12th. During the week, she led the team in runs with five and batted .556.
She is batting a career-best .318 in her final season along with notching career-bests in doubles in RBIs this year. Holloman also played a crucial role in helping the 49ers secure a 4-3 win over Atlantic 10 foe, Rhode Island on April 12. Holloman hit two doubles and drove in the game-winning run. She also finished with a game-high three RBIs. Holloman, a sociology major from Suffolk, Virginia will graduate in December.
The Niners will conclude their regular-season home schedule when they face Winthrop on Tuesday, April 28 for a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 7 p.m. at the D.L. Phillips Complex.
