MASON, OH – The third-seed Charlotte 49ers (13-9) cruised past 14th-seed La Salle, 4-0, in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship.
“The conditions were tough today, but we kept our focus,” Charlotte coach Billy Boykin said. “After winning the doubles point, we raced out to six first set victories in singles play. Paul Cisti came off first and was followed by Krzysztof Kwasniewicz. Kamil Khalil clinched the fourth point with a strong effort at number three singles.”
Charlotte won the doubles point with victories at number one and three doubles. At number one doubles, Charlotte’s Jack Williams and Jordi Massalle Ferrer won their 12th match of the season with an 8-1 win over La Salle’s Trevor Donovan and De’Sean Fannell. At number two doubles, Charlotte’s Alex Calott and Paul Cisti had their match stopped against La Salle’s Chas Berenato and Joseph LaBate since the 49ers had already clinched the doubles point. Calott and Cisti were winning their match, 7-5. At number three doubles, Charlotte’s Kamil Khalil and Krzysztof Kwasniewicz won their 12th match of the season with an 8-1 win over La Salle’s Thomas MacLeod and Hunter Selman.
Charlotte won three singles match to clinch the overall victory. The 49ers won at number three, five and six singles to advance to the A-10 Tournament quarterfinals. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Khalil won his 12th match of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 win over La Salle’s Berenato. At number five singles, Charlotte’s Cisti won his 19th match of the season with a 6-0, 6-4 win over La Salle’s Dale Fetterman. At number six singles, Charlotte’s Kwasniewicz won his 11th match of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over La Salle’s Robert Kasinow, 6-1, 6-2. Charlotte’s other three singles match were not finished since the 49ers had already clinched the overall victory. However, Charlotte was leading in all three of those matches. At number one singles, Charlotte’s Williams was leading La Salle’s LaBate, 6-2, 2-2. At number two singles, Charlotte’s Massalle Ferrer was leading La Salle’s Fannell, 6-0, 5-5. At number four singles, Charlotte’s Calott was leading La Salle’s Donovan, 7-5, 2-3.
Charlotte advances to the A-10 Tournament quarterfinals, Friday, April 26 at 1 pm. Charlotte will play sixth-seed Temple in the quarterfinals.
