CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team will visit South Carolina on Wednesday, March 24 for a non-conference doubleheader at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field in Columbia. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Niners (20-22 overall) are riding a four-game winning streak after sweeping Radford and St. Bonaventure last week. Charlotte also notched its 12th 20-win season in program history after defeating the Bonnies on Sunday.
South Carolina (25-20) recently took a pair of wins in a three-game series over Auburn. Last season, the Gamecocks defeated the 49ers 6-5 in a single game in Columbia. Both teams faced in each other in fall ball action at D.L. Phillips Complex in September where they split a pair of games.
Charlotte’s offense (.303) still tops the Atlantic 10 conference and saw a spark on Sunday where four Niners (Samantha Slade, Kalie Lang, Chelsea Ingersoll, and Briana Gwaltney) all hit home runs. Natalie Capone leads the team in hits (46), Gwaltney leads the 49ers in RBIs (35) and Ingersoll is the home run forerunner with nine.
The Gamecocks are led by Samie Garcia (.414) who has recorded 63 hits. South Carolina hits .313 as a team with the help of Dana Hathorn (.358) and Chelsea Hawkins (.331). The Gamecocks also rank 20th nationally in scoring, averaging 6.31 runs a game.
However they’ll have to face Katie Watkins (12-13) who has tallied 129 strikeouts which is fourth in the conference. Chelsea Lisikatos (6-8) has also contributed significantly to the 49ers’ pitching efforts.
South Carolina’s Julie Sarratt (8-5) leads the team with a 2.87 earned run average. Katie Marks (6-7), Audrey Broyles (7-8) and Katelynn Howser (3-0) have continued to provide depth for the Gamecocks in the circle.
Following Charlotte’s doubleheader against South Carolina, Charlotte will host Saint Louis on Friday, April 26 for a single game at 4 p.m. The Niners will face SLU on Saturday, April 27 for a noon game. The 49ers will cap off the weekend on Sunday with a twinbill against Butler at 12 p.m. which will also serve as Senior Day for Gwaltney, Lang, Lindsey Holloman, and Chelsea Stamey.
