Charlotte redshirt senior Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) hit his 50th career double, but the 49ers gave up five unearned runs in the second and dropped a Wednesday-night 11-2 road decision at Winthrop in non-conference baseball action. Charlotte slipped to 22-15 on the season, while the host Eagles improved to 14-25. The 11 runs were the most scored against Charlotte this season.
The Eagles scored a run on two hits in the first and the 49ers answered with back-to-back singles and an RBI groundout from outfielder J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga.) to tie the score at one.
The Eagles retook the lead on a sacrifice fly in the second, but back-to-back homers in the frame after an error led to five runs in the frame and Winthrop ran away with the contest.
The Eagles put up three more runs on five hits in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead.
Charlotte got back on the scoreboard with a walk and an RBI double from second baseman Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) to make it 9-2.
The Eagles added two more unearned runs in the eighth after an error allowed a base runner and a pair of singles led to the final scores of the game.
Charlotte threw seven pitchers in the game, with freshman starter Micah Wells (Pfafftown, N.C. / Mt. Tabor HS) taking the loss to drop to 0-3. He allowed six runs, but only one was earned in the first two innings. He gave up five hits, with no walks or strikeouts.
Winthrop starter Sam Kmiec got the win on a pitch count. In four innings, he gave up a run on just two hits and a walk to improve to 2-5.
Charlotte’s six hits were by six different batters. Freshman pinch hitter and catcher Nick Daddio (Huntersville, N.C. / Hough HS) collected his first career triple in the contest. Charlotte had three extra-base hits, the fourth time this season that at least half of the team’s hits were for extra bases.
The 49ers will head to Cincinnati for an Atlantic 10 Conference series at Xavier, starting Friday at 3 p.m.
NOTES: Roland’s 50 doubles stands 11th in school history in that category, two shy of a tie for tenth place at Charlotte.
