CHARLOTTE. N.C. – The Charlotte track and field team wrapped up the weekend by competing at the N.C. A&T Aggie Invitational and the Johnson C. Smith Invitational on Saturday.
"It was a good weekend for us, we were picking and choosing certain events for people to work on between the two meets and rested a number of athletes this weekend that had competed every previous weekend this outdoor season," said head coach Robert Olesen. "We had some excellent results and some that more clearly defined things we need to work on as we prepare to transition now into the next phase of our outdoor season at the Charlotte Invitational and gear our training for the championship phase of the season beginning with the Atlantic 10 Championships at home in early May."
In the field events, Katrina Wright led Charlotte with a pair of first place finishes. Wright won the discus with a season-best throw of 154’8. Toby Jo Klauenberg was fifth (132’0). Wright also won the hammer and claimed another season-best toss of 168’4 which moves to third on the all-time list. In the shot put, Klauenberg finished third (42’8.75).
The 4x100m team (Chelsie Carlton, Briauna Jones, Sarah Justice, and Alvonna Blakney) finished second with a season-best time of 47.00. Carlton was sixth in the long jump (17’9). In the 100m hurdles, Juanita Leto was the third collegiate finisher (14.08). Blakney was fifth overall and fourth in the collegiate section with a time of 14.09. In the preliminaries, Leto (13.84) and Blakney (13.88) finished with great times.
In the javelin, Brittany Ann Leffler was second (127’2) and Jana Eatman finished third with a season-best throw of 119’4. Eatman led the 49ers in the pole vault and was third with a throw of 10’6 which is her best performance of the season. Allyson Sherlock was fourth (10’0). Brittney Simmons matched her season-best in the high jump with a leap of 5’3.
Isaac McReynolds took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 23'2.75. Desmond Stearns also finished with a season-best mark of 23’0.75. Coye Still was fifth in the high jump with a season-best leap of 6’6.75. In the hammer throw, Kenneth Pressley was fourth with a season-best toss of 164’2. John Celona was fifth (156’4) and Victor Campbell was seventh (141’8).
Chris Tate finished seventh in the 400m with a time of 48.47.
In the javelin, Daniel Freeman was sixth 177’9.
At the Johnson C. Smith Invitational, Charlotte’s distance runners turned in several great performances.
The 49ers had six finish in the top seven in the 1500m and was led by Zach Greth who won the event with a season-best time of 3:59.94. Michael Tamayo was second (4:01.22), Ben Sterett was third (4:01.73), Cody Hodgins was fourth (4:02.85), and Nicholas Rotz was fifth (4:03.53).
Caragh MacDermott won the 5000m (19:30.95) and Chelsie Matson was second (19:49.19). On the men’s side Cody Hodgins was first (15:35.92), Nathan Tallada was second (15:57.01), and Eleazar Garcia was third (16:17.04).
The Niners will host the Charlotte Invitational beginning on Thursday, April 18.
