For the second time in three rounds of play, the Charlotte golf team posted the low round of the day in a tournament, surging from sixth to fifth after two rounds of the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational at the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa Saturday. The 36-hole day was marred by temperatures in the 40s all morning and afternoon on the par-72, 7,239-yard course.
Charlotte as a team carded an even par 288 in round two, the best round of the 12 teams to climb one spot to fifth place with one round left to play tomorrow morning. The final round will commence with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Central.
The Niners sit at plus-14 (302-288—590), three strokes from fourth-place Nebraska and six strokes from second place Iowa. Kansas leads the field overall, at even par through two rounds.
Sophomore Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardier, Quebec City / Beaulieu) is Charlotte’s top performer of the weekend to this point, with a one-under 71 in round two after he started at one-over after round one. Menard started with two bogeys and a birdie on his first four holes, and scored par on the final 14 of his opening round. In round two, he opened with birdies on his second and third holes, finishing with four birdies overall to go with a bogey and double-bogey for the sub-par round in the afternoon. He is one of three players at even par, tied for sixth over in the tournament field. He is tied for the second-most pars in the field, with 27.
Charlotte’s next three golfers are all at five-over or better. Junior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) was four-over after the opening round and went even par in round two to sit in a tie for 17th at four over. Senior Braeden Cryderman (Huntsville, Ontario / Queens University of Charlotte) and freshman Riley Davenport (Woodstock, Ga. / Sequoya HS) are both at five-over par, in a tie for 22nd in the field of 65 golfers.
Castro and Davenport both eagled the par-five sixth hole in round two, two of the 10 players to log an eagle for the tournament to this point. Charlotte and Iowa are the only two teams with two players on the eagle list so far. Castro is one of three players in the tournament field at five-under on the par-five holes through two rounds.
Individually, Minnesota’s Alex Gaugert and Kansas golfer Stan Gautier sit on top of the leaderboard with scores of five-under par.
Charlotte will look to make its final move tomorrow morning, starting on holes five through eight with golfers from Nebraska and Washington State in the final round.
This is the final regular-season tournament for Charlotte in advance of the Atlantic 10 Conference championships, taking place in two weekends in Coral Springs, Fla.
