CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte’s offense was unable to come together on Wednesday as it fell to Furman in a non-conference doubleheader at D.L. Phillips Complex.

In the opening game, Furman got on the board early and took the 1-0 advantage in the first inning. The Paladins added a run in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 2-0.  Charlotte tried to respond in the fifth and sixth but left four runners on base in those innings. Furman’s defense recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to end the game.

Chelsea Ingersoll, Kalie Lang, and Chelsea Stamey each finished with a hit.

Katie Watkins (8-12) performed well in the circle in game one. Watkins finished with two strikeouts and allowed only one earned run.

Furman struck first again in game two and took advantage of a pair of hits to take the 1-0 lead in the first inning. The game remained tight and looked like it would continue in the Paladins’ favor in the sixth inning but Charlotte’s defense answered the challenge. Furman led off the inning with back-to-back hits and drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Chelsea Stamey’s quick-witted defense at third base allowed her to record two outs and Chelsea Lisikatos struck out at batter to end the inning.

However, Furman tallied two runs in the seventh to push the game out of reach for the 49ers.

Natalie Capone, Ingersoll, Samantha Slade, and Stamey recorded a hit a game two.

Lisikatos (5-7) tallied three strikeouts in the setback.

The Niners will host Rhode Island on Friday, April 12 for an Atlantic 10 contest beginning at 4 p.m. Charlotte will close the series on Saturday, April 13 at noon and will wrap-up the weekend by hosting Massachusetts on Sunday, April 14 for an A-10 doubleheader at noon.
