CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After being away from the D.L. Phillips Complex for 18 days, the Charlotte softball team will host Furman on Wednesday, April 10 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
The Niners (14-18 overall) have faced a tough eight-game losing streak but hopes to get over that bump when it takes on the Paladins who have posted a 19-17 record.
Furman leads the all-time series 31-24 against the 49ers but last season it was Charlotte that walked away with a pair of wins against the Paladins. Charlotte won game one 6-1 and defeated Furman 2-1 in eight innings in game two.
Charlotte’s offense has been the highlight of the season which originated at 14th (.340) in the first NCAA statistics reports a few weeks ago. However, the Niners are now hitting .312 as team which moves to 30th in the nation. Over the course of the last eight games, Charlotte has produced a .237 batting average. But the 49ers are stacked with a powerful lineup that is capable of producing consistent efforts.
Briana Gwaltney leads the team with a .385 batting average and 31 RBI. Her 40 hits this season is currently third in the Atlantic 10. Chelsea Ingersoll (.367) has also been clutch for the 49ers and leads the team with eight home runs, 12 multiple hit games, and eight multiple RBI games. Natalie Capone (.350) has recorded 11 games this season where she’s finished with at least two hits. Lindsey Holloman (.349) has also transitioned well in the lineup for the 49ers during her senior season.
Freshman Jessica Plemmons’ (.333) team-leading 12 doubles is second in the Atlantic 10 and ninth in the nation.
As a team, Furman yields a .251 batting average and is led by Ambree Muller (.308). The Paladins’ pitching performance during the season has been steady as they have recorded a 2.42 team earned run average. Lauren Collier (2.16) is 9-8 on the season and leads Furman in strikeouts (77). Meaghan Houston (2.35) is 7-5 with 50 strikeouts and five saves. Shelby Parker (3.64) has appeared in 20 games and is 3-4.
Charlotte will continue its ten-game homestand on Friday, April 12 when it hosts Rhode Island for an A-10 game beginning at 4 p.m.
