Charlotte baseball continues its eight-game home stand Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in a contest versus the Winthrop Eagles from just over the state line on Greek Night. In-game promotions will be geared toward the Greek organizations expected to attend the event. It will always be Crazy Hat night, with the fan deemed to have the craziest hat to win a prize at the game.
Charlotte won two out of three to improve to a 37-9 series record at home since the stadium opened on March 31, 2007. This season, Charlotte has posted a 19-12 overall mark and a 16-6 record at home. The 49ers have beaten Winthrop in four-straight meetings, 10 out of 14 in Charlotte and own a 16-12-1 mark in the all-time series.
The Eagles were swept over the weekend on the road at Radford and have posted a 10-22 overall mark, which includes a 2-8 road record in 2013.
The pitching matchup will be a pair of hurlers making their first starts of the season. Charlotte redshirt junior Corey Roberts (Charlotte, N.C. / Olympic HS) has been shelved for the most part for the better part of a year, with his last start coming on March 27 of last season. He looks to regain the form that pushed him to a 13-6 record in his first two seasons and placed him fourth all-time at Charlotte in opponent batting average against, at .234 and 17th in career strikeouts, with 163. Freshman Zach Sightler will be making his first career start for the Eagles on Tuesday. In three career appearances out of the bullpen, Sightler has tossed 3.1 innings, giving up four hits and runs, with three strikeouts and three walks in his young career.
The 49ers won Sunday on a walk-off infield single from junior transfer Grant Dunnegan (Clearwater, Kan. / Hutchinson CC), which was his only hit in six at bats, and extended his Charlotte career hit streak to seven games. It’s the longest current active streak for the 49ers. Charlotte’s offense is fourth in the A-10 with a .291 team batting average, but the 49ers lead the league with a 3.26 earned run average, better to the next best team by nearly a half run per game. The 49ers have allowed opponents to hit just .240 this season against them.
The 49ers will continue the home stand this weekend with a three-game conference series against George Washington.
