BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
The Charlotte women’s tennis team was unable to take advantage of a short-handed Gardner-Webb squad Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Runnin’ Bulldogs at the Webb Tennis Complex.
With Gardner-Webb (7-10) down a player, essentially providing the 49ers with a free point in singles and an edge in doubles, visiting Charlotte could not close the door in the non-conference contest.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs won both doubles matches that were played, using a tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot to help clinch the point. The Niners’ pairing of Jessica Pérez
and Alexandra Zinn
battled to a 9-7 loss against Yasmine Doost and Rokia Sacko.
Charlotte (9-5) entered singles action down the point; however, with no G-W player at the No. 6 position, found itself in a 1-1 tie with five matches to be contested. Unfortunately for the 49ers, they came away with just two wins and allowing Gardner-Webb to clinch the tight victory.
Sophomore Natsuko Takayanagi
fought through two tough sets in her No. 2 meeting with Doost before dispatching the Runnin’ Bulldog 7-6 (4), 7-5.
Freshman Tyler Baker
picked up the other Charlotte win, rallying for a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 triumph against Valeriia Popko at the No. 4 position.
The 49ers’ sophomore Lisa Grosselius
also went to three sets in her tilt; however, she was unable to pull out the victory at the No. 3 slot.
Charlotte will look to regroup when it returns to the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex for the final home match of the campaign, next Thursday, April 11, at 2:30 p.m. against Furman. Prior to the contest, the 49ers will honor this year’s senior class of Emmanuelle Briant
, Anna Ekelund
, Iveta Guneva
, Ginny Johnson
and Zinn for their on and off the court accomplishments during their careers. Gardner-Webb 4, Charlotte 3 Singles
