RALEIGH, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to in-state foe N.C. State University on Wednesday afternoon at Dail Stadium.
Charlotte (14-16 overall) fell 2-0 to N.C. State (17-16-1) in the opening game and 10-3 in the closer.
In game one, the Wolfpack struck first and took the 1-0 lead on a two-out rally in the third inning. With runners on first and second, Scout Albertson singled to left field to drive in the game’s first run.
N.C. State tacked on another run in the fourth inning with a lead-off home run from Bethaney Wells to extend its advantage to 2-0.
Pitcher Katie Watkins (8-10) allowed just four hits and recorded five strikeouts. Emily Weiman tossed a no-hitter and finished with a game-high eight strikeouts.
In game two, N.C. State didn’t hesitate and secured a 5-0 lead in the first inning off three hits and a Charlotte error. However, Charlotte responded in the third inning and put a pair of runs on the board after Chelsea Stamey led off with a single to get things started. Natalie Capone reached on a fielder’s choice and Stamey advanced to second off a throwing error by the Wolfpack. A wild pitch put Stamey and Capone in scoring position and Alex Rogers hit a stand up double to right center to cut N.C. State’s lead to 5-2.
The Wolfpack answered and posted a run in the third but Charlotte kept fighting and sliced their advantage to 6-3 in the fourth inning. Jessie Fennell, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scored the run off a double deep to centerfield from Capone.
However N.C. scored two runs off three hits in the fourth inning but then Chelsea Tate and Hanna Sommer hit solo home runs in the fifth to push the score to 10-3.
Kalie Lang relieved Chelsea Lisikatos in the first inning and struck out three batters. Lisikatos recorded the loss and fell to 5-5. Stamey led the Niners with two hits. Capone, Rogers, Samantha Slade, and Kalie Lang each finished with a hit.
Charlotte returns back to conference play on Saturday, April 6 when it visits Dayton for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader beginning at noon.
