After winning via a walk-off homer in the ninth in game one 9-8, Charlotte had the tables turned in game two, as VCU scored two in the ninth to upended the 49ers 4-3 on Saturday night at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium in Atlantic 10 Conference baseball action. The doubleheader split pushed VCU’s record to 14-11, 2-4 in the A-10, while the 49ers are 17-10, 3-3 in league play.
Charlotte got the lead first as it did in the opening game by scoring in the second inning when sophomore designated hitter Derek Gallello (Fredericksburg, Va. / Riverbend HS) recorded an RBI groundout to score junior Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS), who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
The Niners plated two more runs in the third on back-to-back RBI singles from sophomore second baseman Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) and Seager for a 3-0 49ers lead.
A two-RBI double by third baseman Joey Cujas with two outs in the fifth put VCU within a run.
The Rams got a leadoff single in the sixth that bounced off of the elbow of Charlotte starter Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) and forced him from the game. Reliever Sean Geoghegan (High Point, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS) stranded that runner at third in the frame and retired the first nine batters he faced.
The Rams finally got to Geoghegan in the ninth with two runs on three hits, an RBI single from pinch hitter Rob Malan to tie the game and a sacrifice fly from center fielder Bill Cullen for the lead and game’s final run.
Charlotte was able to load the bases with one out, but the game ended when relief pitcher Logan Kanuik got the Niners to line into a double play for the victory. He improved to 2-1 on the season by finishing the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and two walks.
Geoghegan took the loss (1-1) after 3.2 innings of relief. He allowed three hits in the ninth and recorded two strikeouts.
Charlotte senior Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) and Seager tied for the game high, along with VCU’s Cujas, Taylor Buran and Cody Acker with two hits each. Cujas was the only player in the game with two RBI.
The 49ers head down to USC Upstate for the lone midweek game on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
