CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
An early lead in doubles turned into a rout in singles play for the Charlotte women’s tennis team, as it clinched a 7-0 sweep over Dayton Thursday afternoon in its lone Atlantic 10 regular-season match of the campaign. The win was the third straight for the 49ers and came on a sunny day at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
“I feel like we are playing pretty well right now,” head coach Michaela Gorman
said. “But, we still have a long way to go with four matches ahead of us. The season is definitely not over. I feel like we’re working hard and every day looking to improve upon what we did the day before.”
Charlotte (9-4, 1-0 A-10) started off the match by picking up victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles slots to take the 1-0 lead heading into singles for the ninth time in dual match action this year. The top Niners doubles pairing of Lisa Grosselius
and Natsuko Takayanagi
knocked off the Flyers’ No. 1 duo of Katie Boeckman and Maureen Stevens, 8-1.
The No. 3 contest was not much closer, as Charlotte earned an 8-2 decision behind Jessica Pérez
and Alexandra Zinn
against Erin Filbrandt and Sammi Hornbarger.
The 49ers cruised through the six singles matches, as Dayton (5-15, 0-5 A-10) only presented a challenge in the No. 1 meeting by forcing an opening set tiebreaker.
Zinn, however, was able to pick up the straight-set triumph despite a challenge early from Hornbarger, garnering a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 decision in the top position.
In the No. 2 slot, Takayanagi defeated Carly Peck 6-4, 6-1, while Grosselius tallied a 6-0, 6-0 blanking against Stevens at the No. 3 spot.
The bottom half of the Niners lineup posted similar results with No. 4 Tyler Baker
beating Boeckman 6-2, 6-3, No. 5 Iveta Guneva
handing Claire McNulty a 6-2, 6-2 setback and Pérez completing the overall sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Filbrandt during the No. 6 matchup.
“I felt like we played well today. Everybody showed a lot of heart today in their matches and showed up on their court ready to play and get an A-10 win.”
Charlotte will next travel to Cullowhee, N.C., for a 2 p.m. Friday match against Western Carolina. Charlotte 7, Dayton 0 Singles
