CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte women’s tennis team will return to the courts for a pair of matches on consecutive days this week, starting with its lone Atlantic 10 regular-season contest of the campaign against Dayton. The 49ers and Flyers will meet at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex at 2 p.m. Thursday before the Niners head to Cullowhee, N.C., for a 2 p.m. Friday match at Western Carolina.

Thursday’s action will be the first for Charlotte since it improved to 8-4 during dual matches with a 7-0 shutout victory over Wofford March 19. It was the second-straight win for the 49ers, who also picked up a hard-fought, 4-3 triumph against North Carolina Central three days before that.

Senior Anna Ekelund became the first Niners player to reach double-figure singles wins in dual play, improving to 10-2. She has played at four different lineup positions, including the top-two spots.

Classmate Iveta Guneva is on the verge of joining her, collecting nine triumphs thus far anchoring the bottom half of the Charlotte singles lineup. The 49ers own .500 or better records at five of the six singles slots entering this week’s action.

Ekelund also has started successfully in doubles, pairing with sophomore Lisa Grosselius for a 10-1 mark at the No. 1 position. Having confidence with the duo’s efforts, Charlotte has been able to clinch the doubles point in eight dual matches needing just one more victory on that side to wrap up the early 1-0 leads.

Dayton brings a 5-14 overall record into Thursday’s meeting after dropping a 6-1 decision to Duquesne Sunday.

Western Carolina owns a 1-10 mark this spring. The Catamounts last were in action March 17, falling 7-0 to ETSU in non-conference action.
