CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team will head to Philadelphia and face Temple and St. Joseph’s for a pair of Atlantic 10 games beginning on Thursday, March 28.
Charlotte is set to take on Temple on Thursday for a single game scheduled for 3 p.m. The 49ers will also play Temple on Friday at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Niners will close out their trip with a doubleheader against conference-leading St. Joe’s beginning at noon.
Charlotte (14-10 overall, 2-0 A-10) along with St. Joe’s and Butler are the only schools that opened conference play last week with sweeps over their Atlantic 10 opponents.
The Niners are 11-8 all-time against the Owls (9-14, 1-1). Charlotte fell twice to Temple in the regular season in 2012 but retailed by eliminating the Owls from the Atlantic 10 Tournament in May.
The Hawks, who lead the conference with a 15-3-1 record, are currently on an eight-game winning streak. St. Joe’s has evened the all-time series 6-6 against the 49ers after defeating them three times last season.
Charlotte’s offense which tops the conference, moved up several spots from last week and now ranks among the top ten in the nation. As a team, Charlotte’s batting average of .334 is ranked ninth. The 49ers are also ranked fourth in doubles per game (2.0).
Briana Gwaltney opened up A-10 play with six hits, including a home run, and four RBIs through two games. She’s tallied 36 hits which is second in the conference. Chelsea Ingersoll also added four hits, a homer, four runs, and four RBIs in Charlotte’s sweep over Fordham last week. Lindsey Holloman, Kalie Lang, Alex Rogers, and Samantha Slade each finished with three hits during the Fordham series.
Temple split a pair of games with La Salle in its A-10 opener. Temple’s offense (.272) is fourth in the league and is led by Stephanie Pasquale who is batting .414 with a team-leading 29 hits and ten doubles. The Owls have a deep circle but Kelsey Dominik has been the ace with a 2.65 earned run average and a 4-1 record on the season.
St. Joe’s pitching efforts have been solid during the year. The team’s combined 1.75 ERA leads the A-10. Taryn Ashway (12-1) has allowed just 14 earned runs and her only loss of the season was against Western Michigan.
On the offensive side, the Hawks are batting .288 and are led by Sarah Yoos and Dana Parks who are the only players with at least 20 hits.
Following Saturday’s game, Charlotte will face North Carolina State on the road on Wednesday, April 3 for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
