Charlotte baseball completes a five-game road swing Tuesday afternoon with a trip to Clinton, S.C. and Presbyterian College, with first pitch at 3 p.m.
Charlotte recently won two out of three to open Atlantic 10 Conference play at Richmond over the weekend at Pitt Field. The 49ers trailed in all three games, but came back twice, including in the ninth inning on Friday and the eighth inning on Sunday. The Niners had the tying run disallowed in the Saturday game in the ninth inning on a controversial ending to that contest and left town with an overall record of 16-7, the best win percentage in the Atlantic 10 to this point. Charlotte is 12-5 in March and 3-4 on the road this season.
Presbyterian also won two of three over the weekend against Winthrop, including the last two, which included a 10-inning 4-3 win in game one of a Saturday doubleheader. The Blue Hose had lost two in a row before that, at home to Wofford and the opening game of the Winthop series. PC enters the game with a 15-10 mark and a 5-2 home record.
Charlotte has won the last two meetings against the Blue Hose, but lost in the only trip in Clinton, 5-2 in the 2008 season.
Jason Harris (Austin, Tex. / Barton Co. CC) will make the start for Charlotte Tuesday. He made a relief appearance over the weekend, but has four starts. His last two starts resulted in his win and loss for the season. His 1-1 record goes with a 2.08 earned run average, 13 strikeouts and nine walks.
PC will send lefty Chad Sanders to start the home game. Sanders has posted a 3-1 mark, winning his last three relief appearances. This will be his second start of the season. He has struck out six and walked five.
As of Monday’s NCAA statistics release, relief pitcher Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C. / Pitt CC) is tied for the national lead with six pitching victories. He took the comeback win on Friday and was in line for a win if Charlotte was able to complete the comeback on Saturday. He has not posted a loss this season in a team-high 14 appearances this season. He is also ranked 11th in the country in hits allowed per nine innings, at 4.73.
In other ranking news, junior Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) added two more doubles to his ledger at Richmond to sit at a conference-leading 12 this season. That total is tied for third in the country through the weekend’s games.
The 49ers are 34th in the country with a team batting average of .302 and are 38th in the nation in earned run average, posting the nation’s 46th-best win percentage through six weeks.
The Blue Hose have played four extra-inning games this season, winning all four. Charlotte has a loss in its only extra-inning game this season, though they forced a ninth-inning tie, and the 49ers have three wins thanks to ninth-inning heroics (walk-off wins against Kent State and Siena and a last at bat victory over Richmond).
The 49ers return home this weekend with the first home conference series of the season, with new A-10 team VCU visiting Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium, starting Friday at 6 p.m.
