Redshirt freshman Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) was today named the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week by the league office.

Lang capped off a great week by driving in three, including the game-winning run in a tie game at Richmond Sunday to help the 49ers take the weekend series on the road at Pitt Field. Lang led Charlotte with a .417 batting average and five RBI in the series.

In Friday’s series opener in Richmond, Lang drove in a pair in the seventh to get Charlotte to within one for a late ninth-inning rally. Lang finished that game with hits in his last three at bats, including his first career triple in the ninth, which led to Charlotte’s seventh run in the 8-5 win in which the 49ers scored four runs in the ninth for the victory. Charlotte and Richmond entered the weekend tied for the best record in the league at 14-6. Charlotte left Richmond with a pair of wins and the league’s best overall mark at 16-7, now sporting the 2-1 A-10 record.

After the weekend, Lang took over the team lead in RBI, with 22.

Xavier’s Vinny Nittoli and Saint Louis’ Alex Kelly were named Co-Player of the Week, while La Salle’s Pat Christiansen and Butler’s Chase Byerly were named Co-Pitcher of the Week this week.

Charlotte has placed one player in the league’s weekly honors in four the six weeks of the season to this point. Shane Basen (week two, 2/25) and Justin Seager (week five, 3/18) won Player of the Week, while freshman pitcher Sean Geoghegan (week four, 3/11) took Rookie of the Week previously.

Brett's older sister, Kalie, was named A-10 Softball Player of the Week on February 27, 2012. She is a senior on the softball squad in 2013.

Charlotte finishes a five-game road swing Tuesday at Presbyterian at 3 p.m. The 49ers return home this weekend in their first home conference series, hosting VCU starting Friday at 6 p.m.
