CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A meeting between Mecklenburg County foes Charlotte and Davidson is set for 2 p.m. Sunday inside Halton Arena when the 49ers play host to the Wildcats in WNIT Second Round action. It marks the second time this season the two programs have met on the women’s basketball hardwood.
The Niners advanced to the next round, improving to 25-5 on the campaign, with a 79-61 triumph Thursday over Appalachian State in the WNIT First Round. The 25 wins are the second most in a single season in program history, while the 13 victories inside Halton Arena tie the school standard for one year.
Charlotte was carried in the triumph by double-doubles from seniors Amanda Dowe and Jennifer Hailey. Dowe scored 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, while Hailey added 20 and 11, respectively. It marks the 10th time this season in which two 49ers had a double-double in the same contest with the Niners owning an 8-2 record in those contests.
Junior Ny Hammonds handed out 10 assists, tying the single-game school postseason mark. It was the fourth time this year in which Hammonds has distributed double-digit assists.
All in all, 10 Charlotte players saw action in Thursday’s victory, including the inaugural postseason action for freshmen Alexis Alexander, Tori Carter, Kira Gordon and Shequana Harris. Hammonds earned her first career postseason start among the four games in which she has played the last three years.
The 49ers also were able to convert 26 fast-break points, their highest total of the season in the category. The 48 points netted in the paint match the second most by Charlotte this year.
Davidson brings a 22-12 ledger into Sunday’s meeting, fresh off the Wildcats’ first postseason triumph in school history Thursday when they defeated Old Dominion, 82-73, in Norfolk, Va.
The ’Cats finished as the runner-up in the Southern Conference, falling by one, 64-63, to Chattanooga in the league tournament championship game.
Sophia Aleksandravicius was tabbed the SoCon Player of the Year for the second-straight season and guides Davidson with 16.4 points and 10.1 rebounds per contest.
The Niners won the first meeting between the two schools this year, 69-54, Dec. 21 inside Halton Arena. Charlotte pulled away from a tight contest with an 18-0 first half run over an 8:12 span and limited Aleksandravicius to four points on 2-of-18 shooting.
The 49ers’ victory gave them a 12-8 lead in the all-time series, having won their last three matchups entering Sunday. Charlotte owns an 8-4 edge in games played on its home floor.
