RICHMOND,  VA – Kamil Khalil won his singles match but the Charlotte 49ers (10-6) saw their five-match winning streak end with a 6-1 loss at 25th-ranked VCU (15-4).

VCU won all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte’s Jack Williams and Jordi Massalle Ferrer suffered their first loss of the season with an 8-3 setback against the 20th-ranked doubles team in the nation VCU’s Alexis Heugas and Dylan McCloskey. At number two doubles, Charlotte’s Kamil Khalil and Krzysztof Kwasniewicz lost to the 55th-ranked doubles team in the nation VCU’s Alejandro Argente and Jaime Vazquez, 8-5. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Alex Calott and Nate Shanok lost to VCU’s Max Wennakoski and Michal Voscek, 8-7 (7-3).

VCU won five of the six singles matches to claim the overall victory. At number one singles, Charlotte’s Williams lost to the 72nd-ranked player in the nation VCU’s Heugas, 6-2, 6-3. At number two singles, Charlotte’s Massalle Ferrer lost to the 21st-ranked player in the nation VCU’s Wennakoski, 6-3, 6-1. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Calott lost to VCU’s Argente, 6-0, 6-0. At number four singles, Charlotte’s Khalil won his fourth straight match with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win over VCU’s Claes Goransson. At number five singles, Charlotte’s Kwasniewicz lost to VCU’s Vazquez, 6-1, 6-4. At number six singles, Charlotte’s Shanok lost to VCU’s McCloskey, 6-4, 6-1.

The 49ers return to action at in-state rival East Carolina on Sunday, March 24 at 12 pm.
