CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After the first day of the 49er Classic, Alicia Gainey of the Charlotte track and field team is in third place in the heptathlon.

The Classic begin on Thursday morning at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center and featured just two events on opening day.  

Gainey is in third with a point total of 2824 after four events. Her best performance was in the shot put where she finished second with a toss of 38’0.25. Gainey was third in the 100m hurdles (15.28) and high jump (5’1). She clocked a time of 27.06 in the 200m to finish eighth.

Evelyn Putman is the only other 49er competing in the heptathlon. Putman is currently in seventh place (2489). She finished fourth in the 200m (26.49), sixth in the 100m hurdles (15.65), eighth in the high jump (4’9.5), and 14th in the shot put (26’02.75).

The remaining events (long jump, javelin, and 800m) will take place on Friday at 10 a.m.

Nick Swan and Mike Cross are representing Charlotte in the decathlon.  Swan is in ninth place with a point total of 2448. He finished in the top ten in three of Friday’s five events. Swan was fifth in both the 100m (11.57) and 400m (53.09). He was sixth in the high jump (5’10.75), tenth in the long jump (19’09.5), and 12th in the shot put (32’05).

Cross is in tenth place (2441) and his best event was the 400m where he finished fourth with a time of 53.03. He was sixth in the long jump (20’09.25) and eighth in the both the shot put (34’02.75) and high jump (5’08.50). Cross was 15th in the 100m (11.79).

The decathlon resumes on Friday, March 15 at 9 a.m. The field events are slated for a noon start and running events begin at 1 p.m.
