BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Despite a stellar performance from Kalie Lang that included three home runs on Wednesday, the Charlotte softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Campbell at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
In the first game, Lang’s outing included two home runs and a game-high four RBIs but it wouldn’t be enough as Charlotte fell 6-5 to Campbell off a walk off homer.
After a rocky start by the Niners (11-9) in which they allowed four runs in the first inning, they immediately answered the challenge put up by the Camels (14-8) in the second inning. With two outs, Chelsea Stamey recorded Charlotte’s first hit with a double to left center. Lang cut Campbell’s lead to 4-2 after crushing a two-run homer over the right centerfield fence.
Both teams went scoreless in the third but Campbell would feel Lang’s wrath in the fourth inning. With one out, freshman Jessica Plemmons doubled to right field to set up Lang for an encore performance. Lang relentlessly crushed another homer, sending it over the left field wall to tie the game 4-4.
Following a few quiet innings for the Campbell offense, they regained the lead after Courtney Klingler hit a solo home run, giving the Camels the 5-4 edge.
The 49ers put up a solid fight in the seventh inning after Alex Rogers led off the inning with a walk. Samantha Slade advanced Rogers to second with a sacrifice bunt but the Camels would record the second out the next play. Chelsea Ingersoll reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Rogers to score and tie the game 6-6.
However Olivia Scarborough’s solo walk off homer in the bottom on the seventh was all Campbell needed to secure the win.
Katie Watkins (6-7) finished with three strikeouts, allowed eight hits and six earned runs.
In game two, Campbell took another early lead and posted three runs in the first inning. Lang hit her third home run of the day and fourth of the season in the top of the fifth to slice Campbell’s edge to 3-1. Chelsea Lisikatos singled and Natalie Capone reached on a Campbell error but the Niners were unable to drive in anymore runs.
Lang’s trio of homers on Wednesday increases her career total to 11.
Capone tallied two hits to record her eighth multiple game of the season. Slade, Rogers and Gwaltney each finished with a hit.
Lisikatos recorded her first loss in the circle and finished with four strikeouts. She only allowed two hits in the loss.
Charlotte travels to Greensboro on Thursday, March 14 to face UNC-G for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
