Charlotte golf climbed to fifth overall with a seven-over 295 at the opening round of the Auburn Tiger Invitational, played at the Par-72, 7,149-yard Grand National Lake Course Monday morning. Rains came through, postponing the second round to Tuesday, when the teams will play 36 holes, starting at 8 a.m. Central with a shotgun start.
No team came in under par for the day, and only five of the 81 golfers on the course were able to post sub-par rounds. Four of five Charlotte golfers were better than the 75.99 stroke average posted in the round. The Niners are just five strokes back of leader East Carolina, which landed at 290 in round one of the 15-team field.
"On this golf course, you have to be very patient and really take what the golf course gives you," said Charlotte head coach Ryan Cabbage, who played golf and coached at Auburn before taking over the Charlotte program last season. "We had a pretty solid team round and hit a lot of quality shots today. We were patient and made some birdies late in the round. With 36 holes tomorrow, we will have to be patient again. I'm looking forward to another good day for our guys."
Junior Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt. / Hartford HS) was Charlotte's low finisher of round one, posting an even-par 72 to tie for sixth in the field. Toland birdied three of his first six holes, and finished with five birdies and five bogeys for the round.
Freshman Dan Hendry (Dubai, United Arab Emirates / Dubai College) was one stroke back of Toland with a one-over 73. Hendry finished with 14 pars, two birdies, a bogey and one double-bogey for the very steady round. He is tied for 13th with six other golfers.
A pair of Niners turned in rounds of 75 to complete the seven-over team score. Junior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) and sophomore (Ange-Gardier, Quebec City / Beaulieu) were both three-over for the opening round, but had different journeys to the same destination. After starting with five pars, Castro finished with three birdies, but a pair of double-bogeys, while Menard had two birdies on his last five holes after starting with four bogeys on his first 12 played. They are tied for 29th with six other golfers at that score.
