Charlotte golf heads to Auburn, Ala. for its seventh tournament of the season, playing in the Auburn Tiger Shootout, conducted at the Grand National - Lake Course near the Auburn University. The two-day tournament begins with 36 holes in a shotgun starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 11 and concludes with a single 18-hole round on Tuesday, March 12.
The host Tigers are the highest-ranked team in the field, at No. 21, according to the latest poll in Golfweek. The Tigers and 49ers are joined by Chattanooga, East Carolina, Houston, Kentucky, Kennesaw State, North Carolina, Memphis, Mississippi State, Samford, South Alabama, Troy, Wake Forest and Yale.
The 49ers Have a top-four and a pair of top-three finishes so far this season. Charlotte was third after the first and second rounds of the Bayou City Collegiate Championships two weeks ago before settling at seventh in the 15-team field to start spring-semester competition.
Senior Braeden Cryderman (Huntsville, Ontario / Queens University of Charlotte), juniors Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) and Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt. / Hartford HS), sophomore Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardier, Quebec City / Beaulieu) and freshman Dan Hendry (Dubai, United Arab Emirates / Dubai College) are Charlotte's five in the field at this week's event.
Castro and Cryderman tied for 22nd in the last event in Texas, finishing at two-over par 218. Both golfers have turned in third-place finishes at events this season. Cryderman shot a four-under 212 at his first event of the fall, the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke to finish in a tie for third place in the 64-player field. Castro was tied for third at Charlotte's final event of the fall, the Pacific Invitational. He ended at 202, for a 14-under par among 60 golfers in California. Both were named A_10 Golfer of the Week for their individual performances.
Hendry has earned a Rookie of the Week honor in the league after a fourth-place tie at the Tar Heel Invitational in mid-September. He ended with a career-low seven-under 209 at that event.
Menard, the reigning A-10 Player and Rookie of the Year, shot a 12-under 204 at the Pacific Invitational to finish in a tie for tenth, his best finish of 2012-13.
Grand National is a familiar spot for Charlotte head coach Ryan Cabbage, who is a 1998 graduate from and was a 12-year assistant coach at Auburn until his arrival in Charlotte.
Pairings for the event will be posted over the weekend, with day-two pairings passed on team standings after the opening two rounds. Live stats can be found at Golftstat throughout the event.
