Baseball fans were treated to a pitcher's duel in Saturday's of the Kent State-Charlotte series, with the visiting Golden Flashes halting Charlotte's 10-game home winning streak in a 2-1 final at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium Saturday. Kent State improves to 3-10 this season, while Charlotte slips to 10-3. Both teams put up runs in just one inning in the contest, which took just 2:06 in front of a sellout crowd of 1,364 in the sunniest day of the season so far.
Golden Flashes junior Taylor Williams allowed just one run in the second inning before shutting down the 49ers offense over the final seven innings for the complete-game victory. He scattered eight hits and a walk over the 110-pitch outing, striking out three.
Redshirt freshman catcher Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) drove home the first run of the game in the second after Charlotte loaded the bases with one out on three singles in the frame. Lang lifted a sacrifice fly out to left to bring home sophomore second baseman Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) for the game's first run. Elwood singled to lead off the inning, giving him at least one hit in all 13 games this season and extending his hit streak to 14 games.
Kent State broke up the shutout and scored its only two runs of the game in the sixth inning. After a walk, a single and a wild pitch put runners on second and third, first baseman Cody Koch collected an RBI on a groundout to tie the game. A two-out RBI double by right fielder Troy Summers scored what proved to be the game-winning run of the contest.
The pitching staffs each posted eight shutout innings in the game. Charlotte senior starter John Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio) had another fine start, allowing just five hits and the two runs in the sixth inning. He lasted seven innings, collecting four strikeouts and allowing just two walks in the hard-luck loss (1-2). Reliever Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C. / Pitt CC) tossed two scoreless innings with his only baserunner a hit batter in the ninth.
Three 49ers had two hits each. Three of Kent State's five hits were doubles, with only Summers' extra-base knock coming with a runner on base.
Charlotte and Kent State will decide the series on Sunday in a 1 p.m. start.
