CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senior outfielder Briana Gwaltney has been named the Madness Atlantic 10 Softball Player of the Week, announced by College Sports Madness on Tuesday morning.

The Anaheim Hills native started in all four games last week, helping her team to a 2-1 record. Charlotte (8-5 overall) picked up a pair of wins in an 8-6, nine inning duel with Middle Tennessee State and a 13-2 win over Southern at the War Eagle Classic in Auburn. The Niners fell 2-1 to Auburn and 8-6 against North Carolina earlier in the week.

Gwaltney, who is currently on an 11-game hitting streak, led her team in RBIs last week with seven. She also belted two home runs and tallied eight hits, including a double. Gwaltney hit .533 over the past four games.

Her solo homer against the Tar Heels came when Charlotte was trailing 4-3 but Gwaltney evened the score with her 29th career home run in the third inning. She kept pushing the long ball and hit another home run in the Niners’ next game against Southern where her three-run shot helped extend Charlotte’s lead to 13-2. She also finished with a game-high four hits against the Jaguars.

In a tight 2-1 loss to Auburn, the 49ers recorded just two hits and one of those belonged to Gwlatney. Against Middle Tennessee, she was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Niners will host Elon on Wednesday, March 6 for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at the D.L. Phillips Complex. Charlotte will also host Gardner-Webb on Friday, March 8 for a twinbill starting at 4 p.m.
