Following a four-game home sweep of Youngstown State, Charlotte baseball continues on its current 13-game home stand with a Tuesday noon home contest against Wake Forest at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The game is AVID day, as over 400 kids from the seventh and eighth grades in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system will visit the game as part of a day or programming. Admission to the matinee is free, but season ticket seating will be honored.
The two teams played last Wednesday night in Winston-Salem as a make-up to the regularly-scheduled Tuesday game that was rained out. Wake Forest won the game 8-4, despite being outhit by Charlotte in the contest. The Niners had seven doubles in the contest, the most since hitting seven against Marist in 2010. Junior outfielder Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) and sophomore outfielder Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) each had two doubles in the contest. Charlotte collected 11 hits in the game, giving up just eight. Nine Charlotte pitchers did give up nine walks, contributing to the loss.
Seager continued his hot ways over the weekend, finishing the five-game week with six doubles, a triple, a grand slam, eight runs scored and eight RBI. He leads the team currently with a .436 batting average, a .769 slugging percentage and a .522 on-base percentage. His 14 runs scored and 14 RBI are team-0high totals. 10 of his 17 season hits have been for extra bases, including eight doubles. He has hit a pair of doubles in three games this season. He has nearly a quarter of the team's 57 RBI and exactly 20 percent of the squad's 70 runs scored.
Wake leads the all-time series 36-25-1, winning the last three meetings. Charlotte will start junior left hander Jason Harris (Austin, Tex. / Barton County CC) for his second appearance of the season. In his only outing of the season, Harris lasted 4.1 innings at High Point, allowing seven hits and a walk, striking out two. The three runs charged to his were unearned in the contest, which Charlotte won 12-3. Wake will counter with 6-7 junior lefty Matt Conway. Conway has made three appearances, all in relief, with a 3.52 earned run average. In 7.2 season innings, he has recorded nine strikeouts and three walks, allowing six hits and three earned runs.
The 49ers have had an inning with at least three runs scored in seven of eight wins and a total of seven or more runs in six of the wins this season.
Charlotte has outscored opponents 6-4 in the combined first innings this season and has over 100 more first-inning runs (369-268) in the eight-year span of A-10 membership. The Niners are 3-0 when scoring a run in the first this season and 131-35-1 in eight seasons with at least one opening-frame score. Charlotte has scored first in five of 10 season games, winning all five this season. Charlotte is 183-53-1 when scoring first since 2006.
Charlotte will continue its home stand this weekend with a three-game series against Kent State, starting Friday at 4 p.m.
