Charlotte hit its first two homers of the season, including a grand slam from junior outfielder Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) to power past Youngstown State 10-4 in game one of a scheduled Sunday doublehdeader at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium in non-conference college baseball. The Niners improve to 7-2 on the season, 6-0 at home, winning three in a row. The Penguins are 2-9, dropping their last six games.
Outfielder Mike Accadri started the game off with a base hit to left, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to third baseman Drew Dosch, the runners pulled off a successful double steal for the first run of the game. A failed pickoff of Dosch included a throwing error that allowed Dosch to score for the 2-0 lead, the Penguins first of the series.
An RBI sacrifice bunt from shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) scored Charlotte's first run of the game in the bottom of the third before a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for Seager, who drilled the 1-0 offering to left for the team's first homer of the season and the first grand slam for Charlotte since Zane Williams four-RBI hit on March 5, 2010 against Marist. Charlotte led 5-2 after the third.
The 49ers scored four more runs in the fifth. After a walk to senior outfielder Michael Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS) and a flyout, Seager drilled an RBI double off the wall in the fifth for his sixth two-bagger of the week and eighth extra-base hit in four games this week. It was his game-high and new career best fifth RBI of the game. He scored on an RBI single from second baseman Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) before redshirt freshman Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) hit a 2-2 pitch out to left for his first career homer and the 9-2 Charlotte lead.
Green doubled with one out in the sixth and scored his career-high third run of the day on an RBI single from senior third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) for the 10-2 lead. The hit extended Basen's career-long hit streak to 18 games, including the last nine games of 2012.
Youngstown State scored two runs in the ninth after four walks and two hits in the frame, including an RBI double from third baseman Drew Dosch, his fourth RBI in the series.
Charlotte reliever Ryan Mas (Matthews, N.C. / Butler HS) was outstanding in his first action of the season. In a career-long 5.1 innings, he tied his career high with three strikeouts, allowing just two hits and two walks on 74 pitches. He earned the win (1-0), the third of his career.
Penguins starter Robert Switka took the loss (0-2). In 2.1 innings, he allowed five runs on two hits and three walks, with one strikeout.
Game two begins at 4:20 p.m. with Charlotte freshman Micah Wells (Pfafftown, N.C. / Mt. Tabor HS) opposing sophomore Ryan Krokos of YSU.
NOTES: Seager has at least one double in all four games this week... Roland's streak of 37 consecutive games reaching base safely came to an end in the contest... Charlotte has had an inning of three-or-more runs in all seven wins this season... 10 of Seager's 17 hits have been for extra bases, for a slugging percentage of .857... He leads the team with 14 runs scored and 14 RBI.
