CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte track and field team ended the 2012-13 season with several personal best performances at the Virginia Tech Last Chance Qualifier in Blacksburg and the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame, Saturday afternoon.
“Even though it doesn’t appear we advanced anyone to nationals, this weekend we had several significant personal best performances both at Notre Dame and Va. Tech,” head coach Robert Olesen said. “It was a successful cap on a successful indoor season that gives a number of our best performers some extra momentum heading into the outdoor season.”
T’Sheila Mungo shined for the 49ers in the 400m with a personal record time (54.12) to win the event.
Joann Blakney and Trey McRae each took second in the 60m and high jump with new PRs. Blakney finished with a time of 7.37 in the 60m and McRae cleared 6’11.75 in the high jump.
In the field events, Charlotte secured two top five performances. Jake Deaton was third in the shot put (57’3) and Robert Wilson cleared 15’0.75 in the pole vault to finish fifth.
Anthony Campbell was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 49’5.75. In the long jump, Briauna Jones finished 14th (18’09.25) and Blakney followed in 15th (18’7).
Seven distance runners represented Charlotte at the Alex Wilson Invitational on Friday and Saturday where they all recorded season-best times.
On the women’s side, Hana Sutchar ran a personal best time of 17:47.84 to finish 20th and Morgan Richards (18:10.20) was 22nd in the 5000m. Maria Ruiz set a new PR and was 21st in the mile with a time of 4:57.04 that is sixth on the Charlotte all-time list. Rachel Miller finished 25th in the 800m with a personal best time of 2:11.41, which ranks second on the all-time list.
On the men’s side, Zach Greth finished 18th in the 3000m with a time of 8:50.75. Michael Tamayo (1:52.52) and Christian Norbye (1:53.78) competed in the 800m was the pair finished 37th and 43rd respectively. Tamayo and Norbye recorded personal best times that are third and fifth respectively on the all-time charts.
The official qualifying list for the NCAA Indoor Championships will be released on Tuesday, March 5.
