CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's basketball
team will close the 2012-13 regular season with a trip to Richmond, Va., to
face the Richmond Spiders at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Niners will bring their 23-4 overall and 12-1 Atlantic 10 mark into the contest, having won their last 12-in-a-row to establish a new school standard. Charlotte picked up the record-breaking victory Thursday night, as it closed the home slate with a 63-54 triumph over VCU for No. 600 in program history as part of Senior Night inside Halton Arena.
Although senior Jennifer Hailey had her double-doubles streak snapped at 12, three 49ers poured in double-figure points, led by 14 from junior Ny Hammonds and sophomore Hillary Sigmon. Senior Jai Forney, who chipped in 13 points, hit a 40-footer at the halftime buzzer and earned her way into the No. 4 slot on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays for Thursday.
Charlotte has locked up a first-round bye at next week's Atlantic 10 Championships but will not know its potential opponent until after the conclusion of all games Sunday. The 49ers have a chance to finish anywhere from the No. 1 through No. 4 spots pending outcomes on the final day of the regular season.
Richmond has also assured itself of a place in the upcoming tournament; however, the Spiders will not be one of the top-four seeds with a first-round bye after holding a 16-13 overall and 6-7 A-10 ledger heading into Sunday.
Richmond was picked second, just ahead of Charlotte, in the preseason Atlantic 10 poll; however, it has suffered through numerous injuries before rebounding to win its last four games before Sunday's meeting. The Spiders picked up road wins at Butler and at Rhode Island last week.
Kristina King paces Richmond with 13.4 points per game, while Becca Wann is the team's leading active rebounder at 7.6 per contest. Wann also plays soccer for the Spiders.
The Niners have garnered victories in nine of the previous 10 meetings, including the last eight in the series. Charlotte has two A-10 Tournament wins to its credit against Richmond.
Sunday's contest can be heard live on Charlotte49ers.com with Josh Feldman handling the play-by-play duties. Live stats will be linked through the website, while updates can also be found on Twitter by following @49erGameDay.
