CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team recorded 16 hits to secure a dominating 13-2 win over Southern University on Friday evening at the War Eagle Classic in Auburn, Alabama. 

The Niners improved to 7-4 overall and Southern fell to 0-18. 
Charlotte clung to a tight 2-1 lead but tallied five runs on three hits and four Southern errors in the fourth inning to push the advantage to 7-1.  

The Jaguars put up one run to in the bottom of the sixth but Charlotte continued to dominate offensively and put up six runs in the seventh inning.

Lexi Betancourt led off the seventh with a walk and scored off Lindsey Holloman’s double to left
field. Chelsea Stamey drew another walk and a passed ball allowed Holloman to advance to third. Jackie Kleinsmith singled to drive in Holloman to give the 49ers the 9-2 lead. Hayley Lewis recorded her first hit of the season and tallied a RBI. 

Briana Gwaltney kept the bats rolling and crushed her second home run of the season, a three-run shot over centerfield to extend Charlotte’s lead to 13-2. Gwaltney hit a homer in the Niners’ last game and has tallied 30 in her career. She is on a nine-game hitting streak. 

Gwaltney finished with a game-high four hits, six RBIs, and two runs. Chelsea Ingersoll was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI. Jessica Plemmons and Kleinsmith each recorded two hits. Chelsea Liskatos, Betancourt, and Courtney Carroll all finished with a hit. 

Katie Watkins improved to 4-4 in the circle. She recorded three strikeouts and allowed just two hits. Kalie Lang pitched for four innings and finished with a game-high seven strikeouts. 

The Niners take on Auburn on Saturday, March 2 at 10 a.m. and Minnesota at 3 p.m. on the second day of the War Eagle Classic.
