CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With the indoor season winding down, the Charlotte track and field team will compete at two meets this weekend in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championship.
The Niners are coming off an Atlantic 10 sweep of the conference championships where they set six new league records and won 13 individual titles. Most of those title winners will head to the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier on Saturday, March 2 in Blacksburg, Va.
Distance runners Rachel Miller, Morgan Richards, Hana Sutchar, Maria Ruiz, Zach Greth, Michael Tamayo, Sean Kluttz, and Christian Norbye will compete at the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame beginning on Friday, March 1.
Joann Blakney, T’Sheila Mungo, Briaunna Jones, Cordell Livingston, Trey McRae, Robert Wilson, Anthony Campbell, and Jake Deaton will represent the 49ers at Rector Field House where nearly 500 athletes will battle for a NCAA qualifying mark or time.
Blakney, the two-time A-10 Most Outstanding Track Performer will compete in the 60m dash and long jump on Saturday. Blakney jumped 20’4.5 in the long jump at the Tiger Paw Invitational which is ranked 22nd nationally, along with her 60m time of 7.38 which is ranked 30th.
Deaton, who holds the Charlotte indoor record in the shot put is currently 23rd in the nation with his conference record toss in the shot put (60’10.5).
Livingston will compete in three events, the 60m hurdles, long jump, and triple jump. He was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the A-10 Championship where he picked up titles in the 60m hurdles with an A-10 record and personal best time of 7.95 and a conference record leap in the long jump (24’5) en route to a first place finish.
Jones will also take on two events and will join Blakney in the long jump and will be Charlotte’s lone athlete in the triple jump. Mungo who won the 400m title at the conference championship, is slated to compete that event on Saturday.
McRae, the 2013 Atlantic 10 Indoor champion in the high jump will compete in a field on nine in that event. Wilson will be competing in the pole vault and Anthony Campbell will take on the triple jump.
The NCAA Indoor Championship is scheduled for Friday, March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
