Charlotte baseball pounded out a season-high seven doubles, including two each from sophomore outfielder Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) and junior outfielder Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS), but the 49ers could not keep pace with Wake Forest, falling 8-4 Wednesday night in non-conference baseball action on the road at Gene Hooks Field. Charlotte had a three-game win streak snapped and fell to 4-2 on the season, while WFU improved to 7-3.
Charlotte's nine pitchers allowed nine walks to tie the season high as Wake capitalized on key at-bats with runners on in the game. Three of the Demon Deacons' eight hits, including a pair of home runs, drove in five of their runs, with the other three coming on a pair of sac flies and an RBI groundout.
With the game tied at one in the bottom of the fourth, Wake scored five runs before Charlotte could answer in the late innings. Charlotte had only four singles in the contest, but the seven doubles were two shy of the school record and the most since seven doubles in a game against Radford on February 19, 2007 played at Pfeiffer University.
Seager scored both times after he doubled, to tie the game-high mark in runs scored. He was the leadoff batter of the inning both times.
Charlotte's last double of the game was the only hit of the day from senior Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS). After four games at shortstop, he moved back to third base for tonight's contest and needed the ninth-inning hit to extend his career-long hit streak to 15 games, dating back to the end of last season.
Four pitchers made their season debut, with three true freshman pitching for the first time in their college careers. Freshman Micah Wells (Pfafftown, N.C. / Mt. Tabor HS) took the loss (0-1) in his first collegiate appearance. In three innings, he gave up the go-ahead run in the fourth. He struck out a batter and walked one, giving up three hits in the outing.
Wake starter Justin Van Grouw was solid, allowing five hits in six innings, striking out seven. He allowed one run and one walk.
The 49ers start a 13-game home stand beginning with a four-game weekend series against Youngstown State. Friday's contest starts at 4 p.m., with a Saturday niin doubleheader, while Sunday's game has been moved to 1 p.m.
NOTES: Shortstop Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) walked and doubled, extending his streak of reaching base safely to 35 games, dating back to last season... Elwood last doubled twice at home against Wagner last March 4... Seager's two-double games have all come on the road, at Missouri on March 10 and at High Point last Wednesday... Seager's four doubles, .455 batting average and .636 slugging percentage are all team highs... The 49ers have hit 16 doubles in six games, allowing seven...
