After dormant and practice all winter, the Charlotte golf team is back in action this weekend in Humble, Tex. at the Bayou City Collegiate Championships, contested at Redstone Golf Club. The rare three-day event features a round of 18 each day, starting Friday, February 22 and going through Sunday, and is co-hosted by the University of Houston and Rice University. A typical collegiate golf tournament features a round of 18 and a 36-hole day.
The first golfers tee off at 10 a.m. local time on No. 1 and No 9 Friday and Saturday, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for the final round on Monday.
The 15-team field features nine teams ranked in the Top-75 by Golfstat entering the spring semester, including Texas (2), Houston (37), Baylor (40), Chattanooga (42), South Carolina (43), Indiana (47), East Carolina (62), Louisiana Tech (69) and Charlotte (74).
The 49ers competing this week include senior Braeden Cryderman (Huntsville, Ontario / Queens University of Charlotte), juniors Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) and Joe Toland (White River Junction, Vt. / Hartford HS) and freshmen Riley Davenport (Woodstock, Ga. / Sequoya HS) and Dan Hendry (Dubai, United Arab Emirates / Dubai College).
Castro's last round of the fall was a 64, to tie the school record in his final round of the Pacific Invitational to finish in a tie for third place at 14-under. Toland opened the Pacific Invitational with a career-low 65. Cryderman won Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week after tying for third at the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke in mid-October, finishing four-under in a field of 64 golfers. He posted a career-low round of 69 to open the tournament. Hendry highlighted his fall with an A-10 Golfer of the Week after a tie for fourth at the Tar Heel invitational in mid-September. His career-low round of 65 was one off the school record. Davenport played his first collegiate action last September at the Gopher Invitational, going lowest with a 76 in harsh weather conditions.
NOTES: Pro golf tours are in full swing, with former Niners out in tournament fields this weekend.... Five former 49ers are in action at the Oldfield Open at the Callawassie Island Club on the eGolf Tour... Olafur Loftsson is in second place at seven-under par after two rounds...
