Senior Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) had four hits and junior relief pitcher Hunter May (Cornelius, N.C. / Pitt CC) got his second win out of the bullpen this season as the Charlotte 49ers scored seven runs in the eighth inning to power to a 12-3 road win at High Point Wednesday afternoon at Coy Williard Stadium in non-conference baseball action. The 49ers improve to 2-1 on the season, scoring seven runs in a single inning in both early-season victories.
Charlotte scored in the first inning for the first time this season when sophomore outfielder Brad Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C. / Piedmont HS) hit the first of three two-out singles and scored off an RBI single by Grant Dunnegan (Clearwater, Kan. / Hutchinson CC) for the 1-0 lead.
A Niners error in the third allowed three unearned runs against Charlotte starter Jason Harris (Austin, Tex. / Barton County CC) as the Panthers (2-2) took a 3-1 lead.
That score held until the fifth, when Basen drove in a pair of runs to tie the game with the bases loaded in the frame. Basen is 2-for-2 with the bases loaded this season, driving in five runs in those situations this season.
Junior Justin Seager (Kannapolis, N.C. / Northwest Cabarrus HS) hit the first of two doubles to lead off the sixth, scoring on a double play groundout by catcher Brett Lang (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) for the 4-3 lead.
Charlotte put up another run in the seventh after a leadoff single by freshman Matt Creech (Moultrie, Ga. / Colquitt County HS) after he stole second and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Dunnegan for the 5-3 margin.
The seven runs in the eighth all came with two outs in the inning. Basen, Lang and pinch hitter J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga.) all had an RBI single in the frame, with Seager adding two RBI with his hit in the inning.
May came in with one out in the fifth and after a base hit to the first batter he faced, he retired 11 in a row as the offense came alive. He struck out four and pitched 3.2 innings, with four strikeouts and no walks. May has seven strikeouts in seven total innings pitched this season with two hits allowed and two walks, with an earned run average of 1.29 in two appearances and a 2-0 record.
The loss went to HPU reliever Mike Krumm, who gave up the go-ahead run in the sixth. He got one out and allowed three hits and a walk.
Basen was 4-for-5 in the contest, leading all players with his hits and three RBI. He leads Charlotte with seven hits in three games and a .500 batting average. He also has a hit in all three games this season, extending his career-long hit streak to 12 games, dating back to May of last season.
The 49ers will play a home game Thursday against Pfeiffer at 4 p.m. in a second make-up game due to snowed out games from last weekend.
NOTES: Third baseman Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) was hit by a pitch twice and now has reached base safely in 29 straight games, dating back to last season... Elwood has drawn five of the team's 18 total walks in three games this season.
