Charlotte right-handed senior John Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio) tossed his career-long outing, allowing just one unearned run through the first six innings of play against the No. 10 team in the country, but the 49ers stranded eight baserunners in a late 5-0 loss to North Carolina State Tuesday afternoon at Doak Field and Dail Park. Both teams are 1-1 to start the season. The game was an impromptu tilt due to both teams having home games lost due to snow over the weekend.
Senior Mike Green (Richmond, Va. / Thomas Dale HS) made his sixth career start, and had two of Charlotte's four hits for the game.
Hamilton, the closer for the team the past two seasons, was converted to a starting pitcher for the start of this season and outlasted his previous high of four innings pitched in a game with 6.2 innings of efficient work. He allowed just five total hits and two runs, one of them unearned in the contest on 79 pitches. He tied his career high with five strikeouts.
N.C. State got the unearned run in the third inning when leadoff hitter Trea Turner (Lake Worth, Fla. / Park Vista HS) singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. He advanced to third on a flyout and scored on an RBI groundout by catcher Brett Austin (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence HS).
The Wolfpack only had four hits against Hamilton in the first four innings, including a bunt single, and reached once via throwing error and once on Hamilton's lone walk of the game.
The Wolfpack got two more runs in the seventh and two in the eighth against the Charlotte bullpen.
Hamilton took the loss (0-1), while State reliever Ethan Ogburn got the win (1-0) after five innings of relief work. Ogburn allowed one hit in the last five frames, striking out two and giving up a walk.
The 49ers will return to the road Wednesday afternoon with a 4 p.m. contest at High Point. Transfer Jason Harris (Austin, Tex / Barton Co. CC) will start for the 49ers at HPU's Willard Stadium.
NOTES: Senior Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) had a single in the fifth, extending his career-long hit to 11 straight games, dating back to last season... Justin Roland (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) walked in the third inning, extending his career-long streak to 28 straight games reaching base safely... The start was Hamilton's first since a game against Wake Forest on April 10, 2010.
