CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The five-match homestand for the Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team started Monday afternoon with a 4-3 setback to visiting Appalachian State at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The two teams split the six singles matches but the Mountaineers squeaked out the victory after taking an early lead in doubles.

Charlotte (6-2), who had its four-match win streak snapped with the loss, captured its lone doubles triumph in the No. 1 slot as Anna Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius handed Mackenzie LaSure and Ellie Linsell an 8-6 defeat. However, ASU roared back by clinching wins in the other two contests to win the point and claiming a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.

In singles, the 49ers fought hard throughout each meeting but were only able to come away with a split of the half-dozen battles.

Charlotte was able to claim a win in the lone three-set decision, as Grosselius knocked off Jennifer Ansari 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-4 as the two finished the No. 3 slot contest after Appalachian State (6-1) had already clinched the overall team victory.

Natsuko Takayanagi tallied a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Clare Cox in the No. 2 match, while Ekelund handed Jessica Thaggard a 6-1, 6-2 setback at the No. 5 position two secure the other 49ers points.

Charlotte returns to action when it plays host to Furman at Noon Saturday in the second of five-straight home matches on campus over the course of the next two weeks.
