After losing three weekend games due to the snow storm that came through the area, Charlotte baseball added a pair of weekday games this week to the schedule. The 49ers will now travel to No. 16 North Carolina State (0-1) for a 3 p.m. Tuesday contest before playing the regularly-scheduled Wednesday contest at High Point (2-1). Thursday, Charlotte added a home contest against Pfeiffer (1-8) to start at 4 p.m.
Charlotte lost the Saturday doubleheader and Sunday series finale after winning the opening game of the series and season at home Friday. The 49ers got down early, but scored seven runs in the second inning to beat Delaware State 13-7. The Hornets won 40 games last season and were the first of five teams on the schedule to appear in the NCAA Tournament last year. Three different Charlotte hitters recorded two or more RBI with their first hit of the season in the win.
The countdown to 1,000 program wins is in effect. Charlotte would need to sweep the week to capture the three wins to reach 1,000 in program history in its 35th season of play.
The Wolfpack got in a home game Friday in a loss to Appalachian State, but have not played since. N.C. State is ranked at No. 10 in Baseball America, 13 in this week's Collegiate Baseball News poll and 16 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Senior left hander John Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio) will make his first start of the season for Charlotte and first since April 14, 2010 against sophomore right hander Logan Jernigan. Hamilton was 2-1, with a 2.92 ERA last season as Charlotte's closer, logging seven saves. Jernigan finished 5-1 in his freshman campaign for the Wolfpack, striking out 57 and posting a 5.71 ERA. The 49ers are 7-21 versus the Wolfpack, winning both meetings and eliminating State from the 2007 NCAA Regionals in Columbia, S.C.
High Point was able to get all three games in at the Citadel Memorial Challenge in Charleston, S.C., over the weekend. The Panthers lost 5-1 to Kansas State before wins of 8-6 over George Mason and 7-2 over the host Bulldogs Sunday. Charlotte will send junior transfer Jason Harris (Austin, Tex. / Barton Co. CC) to the hill on the road Wednesday for his first Division I start. He was 2-3 last season at Barton County, with a 6.35 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 62.1 innings after pitching his freshman year at Division II Abilene Christian. High Point redshirt junior Zach Haile will start for the Panthers in their home opener. Haile has seen action this season, getting the win in relief on Saturday against George Mason. This year, he is 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA and seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Charlotte is 17-9 all-time versus High Point.
Pfeiffer started the season on February 1 and has nine games already under its belt. The Falcons started the year off to an 0-7 start, but won last Tuesday against Brevard. The Falcons will travel to Newberry Tuesday before coming to Charlotte for the first time since April 3, 1997. Last Friday's starter for Charlotte, Tyler Barnette (Hickory, N.C.) will make the start for the 49ers Thursday. He has no record and a 4.91 ERA with four strikeouts and six walks after a 3.2-inning debut. Pfeiffer's starter is to be determined following the Tuesday road game. Former Charlotte catch Ross Steedley is in his first year on the Pfeiffer coaching staff. The 49ers have a 16-4 all-time mark against Pfeiffer.
The 49ers are trying to fill the third game lost from the weekend and could have a game pop on the schedule quickly, depending on other weekend action. Follow us on twitter (@Charlotte49ers) or the web site for breaking news.
