CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team picked up a pair of wins by defeating Drexel on the opening day of the Charlotte Classic at the D.L. Phillips Complex, Friday evening.
The 49ers who improved to 4-2 overall, combined 34 hits in the pair of wins. Charlotte won the first game 10-2 and closed the evening out with a 19-10 victory over the Dragons who fell to 0-2.
Charlotte tallied 22 hits in the final game on Friday to set a new single game record for hits.
The previous mark was 21 and was set in a 20-7 win over St. Francis in 2009.
The Niners scored a run in every inning except the fourth and held Drexel scoreless in four of the seven innings.
Charlotte had eight players that recorded at least two hits and were led by senior Briana Gwaltney and freshman Jessica Plemmons. The outfield duo finished with four hits each. Plemmons, who has been seeing substantial playing time for the 49ers in her rookie season, finished with a game-high five RBIs. Her sizzling bat crushed two consecutive triples and she scored three runs.
Lisikatos recorded her first win in the circle for the 49ers. She finished with three strikeouts and walked only one batter.
In Friday’s opening game, Drexel took a 2-1 lead until Charlotte burst open its offense in the third inning with four runs to take a 5-2 advantage. The Niners posted a run in the fourth and fifth inning and added three runs in the sixth to end the game early.
Slade had a solid performance and went 3-for-4 with a game-high four RBIs and three runs. Capone finished with two hits and two runs. Freshman Courtney Carroll recorded her first career hit during her first at-bat this season with a single to right field. Chelsea Stamey, Lindsey Holloman, Lexi Betancourt, Rogers, Gwaltney and Plemmons all recorded a hit.
Katie Watkins threw a complete game for the win to improve to 2-2. She retired four batters and allowed just two runs.
The 49ers will face Army at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb.16 on the second day of the Charlotte Classic.
