CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The 49ers softball team will host the Charlotte Classic at the D.L. Phillips Complex beginning on Friday, Saturday 15. 

The three-day tournament will feature the Army Black Knights, the Drexel Dragons, and the Youngstown State Penguins. Charlotte leads the all-time series against Army (1-0), Drexel (2-1), and YSU (1-0). 

The Niners are 2-2 on the season after grabbing two games from Presbyterian and dropping a pair to Notre Dame and Wisconsin last weekend at the First Pitch Classic.

The Black Knights are 2-3 and opened their season at the Plainsman Invitational Tournament in Auburn, Alabama last weekend. Army got wins over Austin Peay and East Tennessee State but fell to Auburn, Furman, and Kent State.

Drexel and Youngstown will open their 2013 season at the Charlotte Classic. Drexel will open up with a doubleheader against Charlotte at 2 p.m. on Friday. Army and YSU will face each other on Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by Army vs. Charlotte at 1 p.m. YSU and Drexel will be the last game on Saturday and is set to start at 3 p.m.

Sunday will conclude the tournament with Army and Drexel at 11 a.m., YSU and Charlotte at 1 p.m. and Army and YSU at 3 p.m.

The 49ers saw some great offensive efforts from several 49ers during opening weekend. Chelsea Stamey went 4-for-7, scored four runs, and added five RBIs during the First Pitch Classic. Stamey is batting .571 and was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. 

Natalie Capone led the 49ers in huts with six, followed by Samantha Slade with five. Jessica Plemmons, Chelsea Ingersoll, Briana Gwaltney, Alex Rogers, and Kalie Lang have each recorded four hits. Ingersoll and Lang both belted Charlotte’s first homers of the season last weekend. 

Katie Watkins, Chelsea Lisikatos, and Lang have all seen time in the circle for the Niners. Watkins leads the team in strikeouts with ten and Lang has held her opponents to a .286 batting average. 

Following the Charlotte Classic the Niners will host its final tournament, the 49ers Invitational taking place on Feb. 22-24.
