CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's
basketball team, named Monday as the ESPN.com National Team of the Week by
Graham Hays, will put its seven-game win streak on the line by playing host to
Atlantic 10 newcomer Butler at 7 p.m. Wednesday inside Halton Arena. It will
mark the first time in the programs' history they have faced each other.
Charlotte garnered the recognition after improving to 18-4 overall and 7-1 in
the conference following Sunday's 71-66 road victory at Saint Joseph's. It
marked the second-straight Sunday in which the 49ers knocked off a previously
unbeaten league foe.
The current seven-game win streak is a season long, and is the longest for the
Niners under head coach Cara Consuegra and since they won seven-in-a-row from
Nov. 30, 2010, through Dec. 22, 2010. Charlotte, which has already clinched a
winning record for the 26th time in the program's 38-year history, currently
sits third in the Atlantic 10 race and is one of three teams to only have one
Senior Jennifer Hailey collected her third straight and fourth overall Atlantic
10 Player of the Week award this week, tying the school record for most in a
career. She has seven-straight double-doubles, and 17 on the year and 37 in her
Hailey ranks among the A-10 leaders with her averages of 15.5 points and 12.0
rebounds. She enters Wednesday's contest with 988 career boards, needing just
12 to reach the 1,000 plateau and join an elite group in school history.
She also has slid into a first-place tie with Adrienne Jordan (1998, 2000-02) for
the program's all-time blocked shots record with 207. Hailey has at least one
rejection in 34-straight games entering Wednesday.
Joining Hailey with a double-double average is fellow senior Amanda Dowe, who
pours 10.7 points and grabs 10.8 rebounds a game. The 49ers pair is the only
set of teammates nationally to accomplish the feat and the two are among just
36 players on the list.
With them contributing down low, out on the perimeter sophomore Hillary Sigmon
has knocked down 46 3-pointers and junior Ny Hammonds continues to place among
the Top 10 national leaders for assists per game with 6.9. Her 144 assists rank
fourth on the school's single-season list and are just 18 shy of the mark.
Butler owns a 14-9 overall and 5-3 Atlantic 10 record in its first season
competing in the conference. The Bulldogs, coached by 11th-year
mentor Beth Couture, is coming off a 77-60 setback at George Washington Sunday.
Junior Darress McClung paces the squad with 17.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per
game, while her 2.6 blocks average edge out Hailey for the league lead.
