CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team won its first game of the 2013 season by defeating Presbyterian in a thrilling 8-6 victory that lasted for eight innings on the second day of the First Pitch Classic at the D.L. Phillips Complex, earlier Saturday afternoon.
Charlotte (1-2 overall) dropped its first game on Saturday in a 5-1 loss to Notre Dame (1-1).
The Niners started the eighth inning with a runner on second base due to the international tie breaker rule. With Lexi Betancourt on second, Lindsey Holloman led off with a walk and Chelsea Stamey’s groundout moved runners to second and third. Alex Rogers fearlessly hit a single to center field to score Betancourt. Holloman tried to score on the play but was thrown out at home. With two outs, Natalie Capone kept the inning going with a double to leftfield to score Rogers and take the 8-6 lead.
Presbyterian (1-2) took advantage of a Charlotte error in the bottom of the eighth but the 49ers’ defense regrouped to close out the game.
The Niners tied the game 6-6 in the sixth inning after the Blue Hose scored five runs on three hits to take the 6-5 lead in the fifth inning.
The Niners scored a run in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Charlotte had a huge third inning where it scored three runs off three hits courtesy of a single by Rogers, a double from Kalie Lang, and a single from Samantha Slade.
After the 49ers took a 1-0 advantage in the first inning, Presbyterian evened the score in the bottom of the second inning.
The 49ers jumped on the Blue Hose early as Alex Rogers led off the game with a single to leftfield. A Presbyterian error allowed Rogers to move to second. Briana Gwaltney crushed a double to left center field to give the Niners the 1-0 lead.
The Niners finished with 11 hits and were led by Rogers who was 3-for-5 with three runs and a RBI. Gwaltney recorded two hits and a pair of RBIs. Slade also finished with two hits and added one RBI.
Kalie Lang recorded her first win of the season. Chelsea Lisikatos also saw some time in the circle and recorded the save. She finished with a game-high three strikeouts.
In the first game Saturday afternoon, Charlotte held Notre Dame scoreless for three innings until the Fighting Irish scored four runs in the fourth inning, Notre Dame added another run in the sixth inning but Charlotte used two doubles from Lang and Slade to cut into its 5-1 lead.
