CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte women's
basketball team, for the second-straight Sunday, finds itself in an important
Atlantic 10 contest. However, this time, it must hit the road for a 2 p.m. tip
against Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia.
The 49ers, who own a 17-4 overall and 6-1 A-10 ledger, currently sit a game shy
of the Hawks in the conference race as both teams have reached the halfway
point in the league schedule. Saint Joseph's owns a 16-5 overall mark but is
one of two A-10 unbeatens, joining nationally-ranked Dayton, with its 7-0
Sunday's contest, which will be played at Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena, the site
of the first three rounds of the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championships, will help
determine seeding and positioning for the league tournament in less than a
Charlotte brings a season-best six-game win streak into the matchup after
knocking off Temple at home Wednesday, 66-43. The 49ers have set a school
record by holding 10-straight opponents under 60 points, surrendering an
average of only 49.8 during the span.
Senior Jennifer Hailey is the two-time reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week
and brings averages of 15.7 points and 11.9 rebounds into Sunday's meeting. She
is closing in on a pair of milestones in program history, including needing
just two more blocked shots to equal the program record of 207. She also enters
the Saint Joseph's tilt 26 rebounds shy of 1,000 in her career.
Hailey is not the only weapon for head coach Cara Consuegra's club. Fellow
senior Amanda Dowe also averages a double-double of 10.3 and 10.6,
respectively, putting the pair among only 36 players nationally to accomplish
the feat entering the weekend.
Junior Ny Hammonds continues to place among the Top 10 nationally for assists
per game with her 6.9 average, placing ninth in Friday's NCAA statistics
report. Sophomore Hillary Sigmon has hit at least one 3-pointer in 15
consecutive games and has tallied double-figure points in three of the last
Saint Joseph's is led by redshirt senior Chatilla van Grinsven's 14.5 points
and 9.9 rebounds averages. She is one of two Hawks averaging double-figure
points for head coach Cindy Griffin, as junior Erin Shields adds 11.6 per game.
SJU, like the Niners, brings a long win streak into the matchup, having won its
last eight after rallying to defeat VCU 55-50 Wednesday night in Richmond, Va.
Overall, the Hawks have been victorious in 11 of their last 12 contests dating
back to their participation in the Gator Holiday Classic just before the
Charlotte owns a 6-3 series edge all-time against Saint Joseph's despite the
Hawks picking up an 85-73 win last year in Halton Arena.
