CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team picked up its second-straight home triumph Friday afternoon, knocking off Mercer, 4-1, at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex during a colder-than-expected forecast.

"It was a good start to the weekend," head coach Michaela Gorman said. "Everyone fought really hard and did the things they needed to do to win."

The Niners, who opened the home slate last weekend with a victory over Campbell, kept the momentum going by earning the doubles point and winning three singles matches to seal the overall team win. One singles and two doubles matches were left unfinished due to Charlotte (4-1) already locking up enough points.

The 49ers opened the day with a sweep of the two completed doubles contests. Anna Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius handed the Bears' Isabel Dennis and Lucy Payrat an 8-5 setback at the No. 1 position, while the No. 3 tandem of Tyler Baker and Jessica Pérez defeated Roxy Bartz and Natalie Franklin, 8-3.

While Mercer (1-3) posted its lone point in singles action, Charlotte used solid production from the middle of the lineup on down to clinch the victory.

Baker tallied a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Liza Klyachkin in the No. 3 match, while Ekelund handed Franklin a 6-0, 6-0 setback at No. 4. Iveta Guneva remained unbeaten in dual singles play this season, garnering a 6-4, 6-3 win against Kealee Heffner in the No. 5 slot.

The Niners return to action when they travel to Lynchburg, Va., for a Noon Saturday contest at Liberty.
