CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte women's
basketball team puts its five-game win streak on the line Wednesday when it
welcomes Temple to Halton Arena for a 7 p.m. tip in Atlantic 10 action. The
current five-game run is the longest of the season for the 49ers, who have won
seven of eight since the calendar flipped to 2013.
The Niners are coming off one of their biggest victories of the campaign,
defeating Duquesne at home Sunday, 63-54, and knocking the Dukes from the ranks
of the A-10 unbeatens. It marked the ninth-straight contest in which Charlotte
has held an opponent under 60 points, extending a school record.
The victory propelled the 49ers to a 16-4 overall record and 5-1 mark in the
league, tying them with Fordham and Duquesne as schools with one conference
Senior Jennifer Hailey continues to pace the squad, averaging 16.0 points and
11.8 rebounds in all games this year. She raises those averages to 19.7 and
13.8, respectively, in the six A-10 matchups, topping the league in both categories.
She earned her third Atlantic 10 Player of the Week nod, and second straight,
Monday. Her three accolades this season are more than any other player in the
Hailey is joined by classmate Amanda Dowe in averaging a double-double. Dowe
contributes 10.2 points and 10.8 rebounds per game and the pair ranks among
just 38 players nationally to currently average a double-double.
Sophomore Hillary Sigmon has found her scoring touch again as of late, burying
13.3 points per game in the last three outings, thanks in part to nine
3-pointers during the stretch.
Junior Ny Hammonds continues to earn a spot among the Top 10 players nationally
for assists per game, as her 6.9 average places her eighth as of the NCAA
statistics release Monday.
Temple owns a 10-11 overall and 3-3 A-10 ledger prior to Wednesday's tip under
the direction of fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza. The Owls are coming off
back-to-back wins last week over Richmond and at Massachusetts.
Temple, who are the second-most inexperienced team across the country, feature
a roster of six freshmen. However, it is senior Victoria Macaulay who paces the
squad with 14.5 points and 9.4 rebounds. She joined Hailey as members of the
Preseason All-Atlantic 10 First Team and All-Atlantic 10 Defensive Team.
The Owls have won the last three meetings in the series to take a 7-2
advantage. The last Charlotte victory came during the 2009 Atlantic 10
