CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jake Deaton
set a new indoor school record in the shot put as the Charlotte track and field team wrapped up its final day of the JDL Hilton Garden Invitational in Winston-Salem on Saturday evening.
Deaton won the shot put with a throw of 59’2.75, breaking his previous school record toss of 57’11 which he set two weeks ago at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
performed in the long jump for the first time this season and won the event with a team-best leap of 19’8.75 that ranks third on the Charlotte all-time list.
was the top collegiate finisher in the heptathlon with 4,666 points which is fourth on the all-time list. Cross won the 1000m (2:47.65), was second in the 60m hurdles (9.05), third in the high jump (6’1), fourth in the shot put (36’4) and pole vault (12’1.5), fifth in the long jump (20’6), and sixth in the 60m (7.51).
In the 200m, John Osborne
was the second collegiate finisher and third overall with a time of 22.25. LeRoy Rouse
was eighth overall (22.60).
Former 49er Jake Wainwright
, won the heptathlon with a final point total of 4,896. On Saturday he was first in the 60m hurdles (8.53) and pole vault (13’5.25). He was also sixth in the 1000m (3:13.49).
"We rested a number of athletes this weekend for the JDL Hilton Garden meet to give them a break before ramping up for conference at Clemson next week but still had a fantastic meet for those that needed some additional opportunities to compete in order to focus on particular events, new events or specific elements of an event," head coach Robert Olesen
said. “With three school records and a number of new personal and season’s bests we really got a lot out of this meet.”
The Niners will compete at the Tiger Paw Invitational beginning on Friday, Feb. 8 hosted by Clemson University.
